DOCK42 is located in an existing administrative building in the oldest part of the port of Bourgas. The name is connected to the exact location where the building is situated, technically called the dock – the place separated from the water where the ships are unloaded. At the same time, the word “dock” in English means “anchor” – the main purpose of the project is for the occupants to feel the place as their own and stay as long as they want. The number 42, besides referring to the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is also the geographical latitude (the parallel) on which Burgas is located.
The concept of the space is inspired by the context of the place – the harbor, the ships and cranes, the old buildings and the whole atmosphere that it brings. Exactly this ease and openness to the sea, the horizon and the freedom make the place so suitable for the future function – a shared workspace, a place for events and meetings, a place to spend a few hours a day or to drop an anchor for a longer time. As a holistic approach to the interior, the entire construction – ceiling, beams and columns remains visually open and covered in white paint, taking in the specific colors of the port. As these colours are applied in the pavement, on the walls and in the furniture, they are creating different types of zones, separating the quieter spaces from the more active ones. The connection of the interior space with the harbour is enhanced by increasing the size of the windows looking towards it, elevating the sense of continuity of the interior space through the terrace.
DOCK42 has the spirit of a meeting between the sea, the industrial past and the promising future of the city. It is the boundary between everyday life and freedom, limitations and expansions, gray concrete and deep blue.
